Our Local Government client, Hackney, London, is recruiting a Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Environmental Health team within the Community Safety, Enforcement and Business Regulation service. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering environmental health and public protection services, contributing to the corporate priorities and improving standards across the borough.
Key responsibilities:
Conduct inspections of commercial premises and enforce environmental health legislation. Investigate complaints, incidents, and complex cases and prepare reports, case files, and prosecution documentation. Lead targeted operations and projects across areas such as: Health & Safety, Food standards, Infectious disease control, Licensing enforcement, and build strong partnerships with businesses and stakeholders to drive compliance. Provide expert advice to businesses and the public and manage complex investigations through to resolution or prosecution. Support, coach, and guide junior officers (PO3/PO4 levels)
Qualification – Essential
- GCSE Grade (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics.
- To hold an appropriate Environmental Health Registration Board-approved academic qualification, i.e. an MSc, BSc (Hons) or Diploma in Environmental. Health awarded by EHRB or REHIS
- To be EHORB registered or have passed the CIEH Assessment of Professional
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Advanced Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, Social Media and CRM.
Criteria for Shortlisting - Ideal Candidate Profile:
You will be a qualified Environmental Health professional with strong technical knowledge and enforcement experience. The Role may require evening, weekend, and out-of-hours work with flexible/field working.
- Broad knowledge & legal knowledge of environmental health enforcement matters, including domestic noise control and nuisance intervention.
- Understanding of planning applications, enforcement work and appeals.
- Experience in responding to complaints from the public, stakeholders and public elected members.
- Ability to build trusted relationships quickly and de-escalate conflict, providing education and advice and using regulatory powers to effect change.
- Experience of working with a range of agencies and professionals.
- Experience in case management, including gathering information and evidence to support legal action, and Understanding of the rules of evidence and court proceedings.
- Good interpersonal skills and an ability to build trusted relationships quickly.
- An ability to understand and explain legislation, procedures and requirements to others.
- An ability to listen carefully to others' points of view and influence their behaviour through the sharing of knowledge.
- Good written communication skills, ability to clearly and accurately document activity and consequences in correspondence and evidence.
- Ability to assess the proper intervention based on the risk to the public of non-compliance with regulations. Ability to make quick decisions on how to achieve compliance and reduce risk.
- Ability to plan and manage workload to agreed targets and standards within an agreed timeframe.
- Advanced IT skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
